Some gas mileage myths dispelled Has anyone ever told you that leaving your car idling for a few minutes is better than turning your engine off and on? They were wrong! Every minute your car idles you're wasting precious fuel. Newer cars don't need to be left idling in order to warm up. You can always "hop in and go" without fear of damaging your vehicle. Studies show that older cars don't need more than 30 seconds of idling to get ready to be driven. How well do you plan your route to and from work? Did you know that you can use websites like GasBuddy. com and GasPriceWatch. com to get the best prices on your route to and from work? Have you figured your gas costs lately? Isn't it mind-blowing to think that with a gas-powered vehicle getting 25 mpg at $2. 50 a gallon you're already paying $1200 a year for gas, but at $3. 00 a gallon you're paying $1440 a year. A difference of $240 a year. At $4. 00 a gallon your costs are almost $2000 a year for only 12, 000 miles of driving.
Will buying a hybrid save you money? Do you own a Suburban, Tahoe, Expedition, Avalanche, or other make of truck, SUV or large vehicle? If so, it may not be the best solution to sell off that beast! The fact is that unless you are prepared to buy a vehicle that gets double or triple your current gas mileage, it is not going to save you anything – you will lose money! Let’s do the numbers: 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe, 5. 3 ltr V-8 engine – average highway miles – 20 per gallon 2005 Honda Accord, 2, 4 ltr 4 cylinder – average highway miles – 34 per gallon Say you drive 1200 miles a month: Cost per month for gas – Tahoe – 2. 7 fill-ups @ $3. 00 per gallon = $178. 00 Accord – 2. 4 fill-ups @ $3. 00 per gallon = $108. 00 So you would save $70. 00 per month on gas. – Is that worth the loss of interior room and security of driving a larger vehicle? Cheap Gas Tips 1. Shop at non-brand name gas stations. Non-brand name gas stations use the same product as the brand names but sell the product for a few cents less per gallon. 2. Use the right grade of gasoline. Don’t be fooled into believing that premium grade gasoline is the most beneficial for your car. Check your car manual to find out what the manufacturer recommends. Most recommend regular unleaded. 3. Avoid the notorious "top-off. " Topping off your gas tank after the pump has clicked to indicate fullness is basically futile.
Most gas stations are equipped with a vapor recovery system that sucks back any vapors you try to pump into your car after the click. Also, any gas that spills over your tank is not only gas you pay for and can’t use, but a source of pollution. 4. If possible, refrain from sudden stops and starts. Aggressive driving can waste up to 50 cents a gallon. Rapid acceleration and braking consumes more fuel and is harder on your vehicle. Cruise control is the most productive for gas mileage. 5. Check your tire pressure at least once a month. Driving on low tires requires more energy and results in 10 percent or more in lost gas. 6.
Fill up in the morning. Because gasoline expands in the heat, you can save a few cents by filling up in the morning when temperatures are cooler. 7. Do not let your car run idle for long periods of time. If you have to sit in your car for longer than a few minutes, turn the engine off. 8. Fill up on weekdays. Gas prices tend to increase during the weekend. Mid-Tuesday and early Wednesday tend to be the cheapest times to buy gas. 9. Park in the shade.
Leaving your car in cooler temperatures minimizes fuel evaporation. 10. Get a gas card. If used correctly, a gas card can save you up to 10 percent on gas purchases, and some cards have discounts for all gas stations. 11. Keep your car tuned up. Cars in poor running condition use more gasoline. 12. Plan trips well to avoid unnecessary driving. 13. When you run your air conditioner you get much worse gas mileage.
Use your air conditioner sparingly. If you have a lower setting, use it. Turn it on until the car gets cool, then turn it off and let the fan circulate the cool air. Never run your air conditioner with your windows open! 14. Keep your windows closed when traveling at high speeds. Open windows cause additional drag and lower your gas mileage. At high speeds, an open window can use more gas than many air conditioners (especially if they are on a low setting). 15. Check your tire pressure. Over-inflated tires can actually reduce your fuel efficiency, so don't overfill. 16.
If at all possible, change your work start time to avoid gridlock. Stop and go traffic hurts your gas mileage. 17. Take unneeded items out of the car. You don't need to carry snow chains around with you in the summertime. Just make sure to put them back in when winter comes around. 18. Try not to idle your engine for long periods of time. If you are stuck in traffic and you don't think you are going to go anywhere in the next few minutes, you may want to turn your car off. 19. You no longer need to warm your car up for long periods of time, especially new cars.
New cars are made to run when cold. 20. Don't travel at fast speeds in low gears unless you need the compression to slow down. 21. Try to drive the speed limit. 22. Try to accelerate slowly when leaving the stop light. It's not a competition with the driver in the lane next to you. The fastest person through the intersection just gets to spend more on gas. 23. No need to buy the highest priced gasoline.
Most cars are built to run on regular unleaded. Check you owners manual or consult a mechanic. I have had many tell me that the more expensive gas is a waste of money. 24. Revving the engine needlessly wastes gas. There is no need to rev before you turn your vehicle off. 25. If at all possible, try to arrange car pools with co-workers to share the cost of commuting to work. 26. Walk, bike or run to your intended location whenever possible. 27.
When the price is sky high, don't fill up. Wait for the price to go down before you fill up your tank. Filling up your tank when the price is peaking lets gas companies know that you are willing to pay ridiculous prices for gasoline. If you know the price is going to skyrocket go ahead and fill up. 28. And last, the biggest and most important step towards saving money on gas is always try to purchase vehicles that get good gas mileage. The difference between 20 miles-per-gallon and 40 miles-per-gallon is huge.
